Shoo! Scat!

Written by Lois G. Grambling - Illustrated by Barbara Johansen Newman

May 20th, 2010 by Noodlenuts

Professor Flugel was building

a splendid new bird feeder . . .

Little does Professor Flugel know, however, that the splendid new bird feeder of which he is so proud is going to turn his life upside down.

Shoo! Scat! is the story of Professor Flugel’s feud with his arch-nemesis Gray Squirrel, who is determined to use the new bird feeder as his own personal food source.  The catch is that Gray Squirrel is no ordinary squirrel; more like the James Bond of woodland rodents, with brains, cunning, and some seriously amusing gear to help him carry out his plots to gain access to the bird feeder (think tiny raincoats and hot-air balloons).  Oh, and more than a little bit of sly nerve as well, as he goads Professor Flugel mercilessly.

Barbara Newman’s illustrations are incredible—a riot of colour and detail, with the main characters exaggerated in a way that just adds to the hilarity of the story.

When I read Shoo! Scat! to a kindergarten class recently, they were absolutely rapt, despite the fact that it was a little longer than most of their usual storytime books.  They laughed and echoed some of the repeated lines, and made predictions about how each situation would turn out. It was a HUGE hit, and I feel confident that it will be with your kids as well.
