One Dark Night

Written by Lisa Wheeler - Illustrated by Ivan Bates

With a SQUISH-SQUASH-A-SQUISH

And a TROMP-TRIP-A-TROMP,

Mouse and Mole trudged

Through the mush-mucky swamp . . .

One Dark Night is one of those great books about which not much need be said, because its charms are so obvious.  This is a wonderful “scary story” that is not really frightening at all.  Lisa Wheeler has a great feel for the preschool sense of humour, and the surprise ending will both reassure children and tickle their funnybones.

The story is also a wonderful read-aloud, with evocative language and great sound effects, and a great rhyme scheme that keeps the story flowing nicely, though with occasional well-placed moments of suspense.  One Dark Night is sure to be a repeated request in any preschooler’s library.
