The Goodnight Train

Written by June Sobel - Illustrated by Laura Huliska-Beith

All aboard! The sun is down.

The Goodnight Train is leaving town.

Find your sleepers! Grab your teddy.

Climb right up! Your bed is ready!

The Goodnight Train is one of those books that, as soon as you read it, you can see its potential to be a bedtime favourite for the long haul.  The softly bouncing rhythms and cheery tone offer a great settling-down-for-the-night vibe, and Laura Huliska-Beith (who is one of my all-time favourite kids’ book illustrators) expands on that with the illustrations, which colourful and expansive, but with wonderful soft-edged, dreamy quality about them as well.

This is a great choice if you are looking for a bedtime story that is a little bit more upbeat and fun than some of the gentler, more lullaby-like books such as Goodnight Moon, and one that will help you get a more energetic little one settled in for the nighttime.
